On January 29, 2017, Venezuela’s standard time, an official ceremony was held to celebrate the accomplishment of an engineering project, Port Palua Reconstruction and Extension. President of Venezuela, Mr Nicolás Maduro joined the ceremony through live broadcast and proclaimed that the port was put into service.

Undertaken by the joint venture formed by China Railway Shiju Engineering Group Co. Ltd and China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group Co. Ltd, Port Palua Reconstruction and Extension was operated with an EPC(Engineering, Procurement and Construction) mode and carried out since July 6.2012

President Nicolás Maduro expressed his gratitude to China Railway for its contribution to the development of Venezuela’s capital construction through delivering a speech. He emphasized the significance of cooperation between China and Venezuela.  

The project was sponsored by financing. The total amount of contract price was 112 million U.S dollars. The purpose of the engineering works was to improve the functions and efficiency of port. After the accomplishment of the reconstruction and extension project, the design handling capacity of the port was expected to reach from 3,500,000 tons per annum to 7,200,000 tons per annum.
